So I had written down that I’d be preaching this coming Sunday, and begun to do my Bible study on the text for the week (10 wise bridesmaids and 10 foolish bridesmaids, Matthew 25:1-13) and then I walked out of the church building on Monday afternoon and saw the sign out front list my senior pastor as the preacher for the week. So I made a mental note to call his assistant and straighten it all out, and promptly forgot because mental notes aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on! (with apologies to whoever it was who said the same thing about verbal contracts)
Tuesday I watched a lot of television and caught the election returns, and figured to myself that my boss wanted to preach that Sunday to talk about some topic connected to the election. This only made sense to me because it was late at night; he doesn’t do political sermons!
So on Wednesday I asked him about it; he’s out of town and won’t be anywhere near here to preach, so it was me on deck and the sign was a typo. I’m writing a sermon about “real hope” that will, at the urging of some friends, include the word “shenanigans” and the line, “I’m not looking forward to making my first million!”
Between school and Bible study this sermon-or-no-sermon question has taken up most of my time, so that’s the week that was!
