What’s Out there: A couple of interesting finds

Here’s a book review from Tara Parker-Pope’s “Well” blog on the NYTimes, on a book series for teen/preteen girls:

When Addie Swartz was shopping with her 9-year-old daughter and friends, one of the girls noticed a scantily clad model at an Abercrombie & Fitch store. “Why do they have to do that?” one of the girls asked.

Ms. Swartz describes it as an “aha” moment when the idea for a new book series came to her.

“It made me feel like the world is making them grow up so, so fast,” says Ms. Swartz. “It felt like there were so many messages out there that were bombarding her and her friends and girls her age.”

One of the moms in my group here in Saint Louis is always dropping off things like this after her daughter outgrows them, so they catch my eye.

From The Dean’s Blog, a short article on “Two Critical Dynamics of Leadership” from back in August; I’m quite significantly behind on my blog-reading, so I’m just finding it now.

I want to use his place in this movement to write about two particular dynamics of leadership, the ability to stand apart, and the ability to draw together. As I have looked at many movements in the history of Christianity, I noticed that the leader, or early leaders, of each movement show the particular ability to stand apart from the mainstream of the culture of the Church in their time.

Let me know if you spot something I ought to read!
